About 13thCanvas
13th Canvas is an independent art and lifestyle brand rooted in Kashmir, created to turn the region’s stories, visual heritage, and cultural memory into contemporary objects of art.
The brand explores Kashmir through illustration, calligraphy, archival imagery, literature, and design bringing elements of the valley’s history and visual culture into products made for everyday life.
From artist-designed canvas totes and art prints to calligraphy, postcards, bookmarks, stickers, and the Print Club Kashmir- The Monthly Mail, 13th Canvas is built around the idea that art should not simply hang on a wall; it can be carried, collected, exchanged, and lived with.
A major part of the brand is its fascination with Kashmir’s visual and literary heritage. Mughal influences, Persian aesthetics, old manuscripts, maps, poetry, traditional motifs, and the atmosphere of old Kashmir often find their way into the work. Rather than reproducing the past literally, 13th Canvas reinterprets these references through a contemporary design language.
At its heart, 13th Canvas is about preserving memory through design creating pieces that feel nostalgic yet modern, personal yet connected to a larger cultural story.
The brand also aims to create a growing archive of Kashmir through its products: fragments of history, forgotten visual details, poetry, places, stories, and everyday memories transformed into tangible objects.
13th Canvas is, ultimately, a way of carrying Kashmir with you.
13th Canvas grew from a desire to look at Kashmir through the lens of design, memory and cultural history rather than allowing the present political image of the region to become the only visual vocabulary through which Kashmir is encountered.
Kashmir has a much longer cultural memory than the contemporary political circumstances in which it is usually discussed. It has experienced different dynasties, kingdoms, religious and intellectual traditions, artistic movements and periods of interaction with neighbouring cultural worlds. The result is an unusually layered visual culture.
We wanted to ask a simple question: what happens if those layers are brought back into ordinary contemporary objects?
A map, a Chinar leaf, a Kashmiri word, a piece of calligraphy, a historic building, a shawl motif or a postal format can become a small entry point into that larger history. We are not trying to tell outsiders what Kashmir is, and we certainly do not believe one brand can represent an entire region. We are trying to add another layer to the image of Kashmir: one in which history, language, architecture, craft, memory and everyday life are visible.
The deeper purpose of 13th Canvas is therefore revival through contemporary use. We want a younger Kashmiri generation, as well as people outside Kashmir who feel connected to the place, to encounter these cultural elements again not only in museums or books, but in objects that are part of everyday life.
